Company formation falls by 6.2% in the first quarter of 2025

Between January and March, company dissolutions increased by 2.1% compared to the same period last year.

According to Iberinform's monitoring of commercial registries, the number of new business formations registered a 2.3% increase in March compared to the same month last year. However, for the year as a whole, the creation of productive infrastructure has fallen by -6.2%. New companies are concentrated in Madrid (22% of the total), Catalonia (19%), Andalusia (17%), and the Valencian Community (12%). By sector, new company formations are concentrated in construction and real estate (27% of the total), followed by business services (17%), retail (16%), and hospitality (10%).

The strongest growth in new companies for the year as a whole was recorded in the financial (26%), real estate (20%), and primary sectors (16%). 

 

In contrast, company creation experienced the greatest decline in the energy (-41%), automotive (-36%), and chemical (-33%) sectors.  

Data for March show that business dissolutions increased by 12% compared to the same month last year. For the year as a whole, they increased by 2.1%. Business dissolutions are concentrated in Madrid (26% of the total), Andalusia (16%), the Valencian Community (11%), and Catalonia (8%). By sector, dissolutions are most prevalent in construction and real estate (25% of the total), followed by trade (19%) and business services (17%). They are least prevalent in manufacturing (7.3%), hospitality (7%), and primary sector (2.1%).

 

Year-to-date, the most significant increases in dissolutions are recorded in the energy (49%), construction materials (33%), and primary sector (25%).
