The Dutch trade association for business information providers is taking the Chamber of Commerce to court for unlawful restrictions on the Trade Register

Monopolization of the Trade Register harms entrepreneurs with higher costs

Amsterdam, November 25, 2020 - The Association for B2B Business Information is starting a lawsuit against the Chamber of Commerce (KVK) for an unlawful claim on database right, which threatens to undermine the legally protected right to reuse trade register information. With this unauthorized claim, the Chamber of Commerce is taking concrete steps towards monopolizing the public trade register. Discussions about the subject with the Chamber of Commerce came has not lead to a solution. That is why the trade association will go to court to clarify this matter.

Based on database law, the Chamber of Commerce has now drawn up new general conditions that drastically limit the (re) use of trade register information. “With these new conditions, the Chamber of Commerce is closing the public trade register and trying to obtain a monopoly on the use of this public register.” said Rob Veneboer, chairman of the Association for B2B Information (VVZBI).
