Data as a Strategic Asset for Growth and Competitiveness

On 9 June, the Federation of Business Information Services (FEBIS) together with MEP Giorgos Georgiou, hosted the event “Promoting

Cross-Border Data Interoperability and Trust for a Competitive Europe and Crime Prevention” at the European Parliament.

In his opening remarks, the President of FEBIS, Gertjan Kaart emphasised that trust, competitiveness, and crime prevention are  intrinsically linked to access to quality information. He argued that Europe does not suffer from a lack of data, but rather from a lack of  interoperable and usable business information. According to him, data enables businesses to assess risks, build trust with partners, and make informed decisions, making it a critical enabler of investment, growth, and job creation.

The President also highlighted that data interoperability is essential to identifying criminal activities. Using the example of a major drug

trafficking investigation, he demonstrated how authorities were only able to uncover criminal networks by combining information from multiple registries and databases. His conclusion was clear: isolated datasets have limited value, whereas interoperable data creates actionable intelligence.
